At recent rallies, town hall meetings and “tea parties,” a few protesters have shown up with signs comparing Obama to Hitler (i.e. depicting him with a Hitler mustache), or displaying swastikas in the context of implying that Obama and/or his administration are Nazi-like.

One would think that this would not be particularly newsworthy, but Democrats, the White House and their supporters are expressing outrage at this “horrifying” and “menacing” turn of events. (Or faux-outrage, at least.) Pundits, bloggers, media outlets and even top politicians like Nancy Pelosi are claiming that such signs are unprecedented, racist, and even that anyone who brings a swastika to a protest must be self-identifying as a Nazi (instead of accusing their opponents of being Nazis). When anyone tries to point out that the Left continuously compared Bush to Hitler and brought swastikas to rallies for six straight years during the Bush era, Obama supporters mock such claims, demand proof, and then try to ignore any individual examples proffered.

Since I had a front-row seat between 2003 and 2008 at anti-Bush protests in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I saw literally THOUSANDS of Bush/Hitler comparisons and swastikas, I thought perhaps it would be useful to compile here in one place a small sampling of them — to prove beyond any doubt that Hitler and swastikas were referenced incessantly at basically every single protest during the Bush administration. Anyone who claims otherwise is lying, as is anyone who claims that people who bring swastikas to rallies are necessarily self-identifying as Nazis.

I’m not saying I “approve” of the new variant of this trend (comparing Obama to Hitler), nor that it is any more clever or insightful than comparing Bush to Hitler; I only post these images here to highlight the hypocrisy of anyone now expressing outrage that Obama could uniquely suffer such an indignity.

The pictures below were all taken by me at protests between 2003 and 2008 in the San Francisco Bay Area. One can easily find hundreds of similar photos on my site zombietime. And I am just one photographer in one city — there are innumerable similar examples by other citizen journalists in other cities across America.

In 2007, Congressman Keith Ellison himself compared Bush to Hitler — and when a member of the House of Representatives did it…absolute silence from the mainstream media.

One of the most notorious regulars at Bay Area left-wing protests is a guy whom I refer to as “Mr. Binder Clips,” in reference to the clips he inevitably uses to hold his sign together. He usually displays a sign which says “SMASH THE JEWISH STATE” (here he is in 2004 and again in 2009, for example), though he sometimes branches out to other anti-Jewish messages.

Well, at the recent ANSWER-sponsored protest on March 21st in San Francisco, he decided to add an extra little sentence to his sign, in case anyone had any doubts as to his true feelings; he was captured in action by zomblog contributor “SaraRose”:

“It’s the Jews, Stupid.”

This isn’t surprising to those of us who have seen this guy in action: he’s obviously an unapologetic anti-Semite. Over the years I’ve eavesdropped on him various times, and learned he is an Argentinian Nazi.

For example, back in 2005, he attended a lecture given by Ward Churchill on the U.C. Berkeley campus, where I made an audio recording of the question he asked, to which I supplied the following caption:

Next up was this Argentinian fellow who brought the subject back around to Eichmann. But instead of agreeing with Churchill that Eichmann was nothing more than a bureaucrat who did evil things because he had no moral conscience, the questioner seemed to be a fan of Eichmann and took offense at the Mossad’s abduction of the former Nazi in Argentina in 1960:

“Because after all, most of the people in this country don’t even know who Eichmann was. Who was [I call it] kidnapped from my country by the Jews, and taken without any kind of diplomatic action. So isn’t that a fact that, that bother them that the fact that you call empire arrogant and criminal, what bothers them, actually?”

But what is surprising is that a Nazi (or at least a Nazi sympathizer) who is obviously anti-Semitic is accepted without dispute by the far left-wing in the San Francisco area. Perhaps, as I pointed out in the link above, because he claims to be a communist, he is allowed into the fold. All it takes is the proper use of a few buzzwords (“empire,” etc.), and you can get away with essentially anything on the far left.

On the night of March 18, anti-military radical protesters smashed the windows of the embattled Marines Recruiiting Office in Berkeley:

Windows were smashed and red paint was splashed Wednesday night on the Marine Corps recruiting center, which has been the target of protests for the past 18 months.

The incident, which came on the eve of the sixth anniversary of the Iraq war, was caught on tape by a surveillance camera about 8:55 p.m. at the center in downtown Berkeley, police said.
Police have not made any arrests but are reviewing the tape, Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said.
…
Police found a sledgehammer and a crowbar in a nearby garbage can that they are reviewing as evidence.

After breaking windows and defacing the Marine Corps logo at the center, the half-dozen vandals wearing dark clothing scattered in three different directions, police said. The suspects’ faces were covered, police said.

The photos above (courtesy of the San Jose Mercury News) were taken on the morning of Thursday, March 19, as the window was about to be replaced.

I went to Shattuck Square in Berkeley a few hours later to take pictures, and found that not only had the windows already been repaired, but — to my astonishment…

…the protesters were already back, brazenly demonstrating in front of the newly repaired windows, just a short time after they had been broken.

Pro-military counter-protesters got wind of the event and showed up as well, creating a defensive line around the office. (Notice the new window behind them; you can see in this photo I took last year during a previous incident that the window used to have a Marine Corps logo on it before it was broken.)

In an interview with The Daily Cal, Code Pink — one of the groups protesting — denied any responsibility for the window smashing, but added,

Joi said she did not know who was responsible for vandalizing the center, but that frustration with the Marines was understandable.

“It is not the right thing for us to do,” she said. “But I cannot tell (anyone) what the right thing is for (them) to do.”

In other words — we didn’t do it, but we don’t mind that it was done.

However, Code Pink wasn’t the only group there — World Can’t Wait was also on hand, and several apparently unaffiliated protesters — some of whom were masked, just like the attackers the night before. Hmmmmmm…

Note also the comical sign, “Racist ,Fa[s]cist, Pro War, Republican!” with an arrow pointing toward the center. Because, as everyone knows, no Democratic president has ever ordered the Marines into battle! They’re purely a Republican branch of the military.

The actual criminals themselves took a photo of their deed moments after smashing the window the night before, and posted it on IndyBay. Since IndyBay is likely to eventually redirect this link (they don’t like “outsiders” linking to their reports), here’s the text that accompanied the above photo:

At 9PM on March 18th, the eve of the 6th anniversary of the war in Iraq, a group of persons wearing masks smashed the windows and splattered red paint at the U.S. Marine Corps Recruiting Center in Berkeley, California.

The center has been the target of protests for the last 18 months, and stands as a symbol of U.S. militarism and imperialist wars. The act of property distruction stands alone as the embodyment of frustration of a people whos government does not listen to or care about them.

Police have not made any arrests but are reviewing the tape, said Sgt. Mary Kusmiss. A sledgehammer and a crowbar were found in a nearby garbage can nearby, and are being reviewing as evidence. Predictably, Cindy Sheehan showed up as well. This is sort of her default location; when she has nothing better to do, she drifts back to the Marines office in Berkeley.

The circus continued all afternoon. Were the perpetrators among the crowd? Probably. But since they had been wearing masks, there was no way to tell.

San Franciscans have recently been finding themselves in the uncomfortable position of riding around on public buses plastered with the words “ISLAM – Submission to God.” I say “uncomfortable” because San Francisco is famously amongst the most secular and non-religious cities in the nation. But there has been nary a peep of comment or protest about these ubiquitous in-your-face ads, which are shown here in photos taken on March 2 in San Francisco.

Such was not the case a few weeks ago in Ft. Lauderdale, however, which is one of the cities where the ads first appeared on buses. As reported in the Miami Herald, Fort Lauderdale mayor Jim Naugle joined a protest against the same ad campaign. While the protest did not succeed in getting the ads removed, it highlighted the fact the the ads were co-sponsored by the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) — a fact which can be easily confirmed with a little research: The ads themselves link to www.whyislam.org, which states at the bottom of the page that it is a project of ICNA; ICNA’s local chapter has a page on its own site about creating the ISLAM ad campaign in San Francisco; that page also lists CAIR as a co-sponsor (along with many other Muslim groups); and CAIR’s own site “Calling Islam” has many photos, links, and press releases about the ad campaign on its home page. So there’s no question that the ads are an ICNA and CAIR co-project.

Why is this noteworthy? Because ICNA is not your run-of-the-mill Muslim group, but rather is the North American branch of Jamaat-e-Islami, the fundamentalist Pakistani political party whose goal is the imposition of sharia law, and who are closely affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, one of the primary fonts of Islamic fundamentalism in the modern world. ICNA’s mission statement on its own Web site says

The goal of ICNA shall be to seek the pleasure of Allah (SWT) through the struggle of Iqamat-ud-Deen (establishment of the Islamic system of life) as spelled out in the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

The phrase “establishment of the Islamic system of life” means living under sharia (Islamic law) in a caliphate (Islamic political structure). Even the briefest of Web searches turns up any number of links about ICNA which show that it is among the most extreme of all fundamentalist Islamic groups in the United States.

(The proprietor of the zTruth blog also noted the San Francisco Islam bus ad campaign and tried to engage ICNA in a conversation about the cost of the ads — with predictable results: ICNA refused to answer his journalistic questions, even though they specifically invite email exchanges.)

But even more noteworthy is the involvement of CAIR in this concerted effort at dawah (Islamic proselytizing). CAIR derives its political credibility from supposedly being a respectable civil rights nonprofit organization:

CAIR’s literature describes the group as a “leading advocate for justice and understanding”, a mission which includes promoting the understanding of Islam, and protecting Muslim civil liberties. Their stated core principles include supporting freedom of religion, protecting the civil rights of everyone, and encouraging inter-faith dialogue.

But as their association with ICNA and this ad campaign now reveals, CAIR’s real goal is to convert Americans to Islam — with the eventual goal of turning the United States into a fully Islamic society (i.e. one operating under sharia).

In fact, on CAIR’s own “Calling Islam” site, they reveal their true agenda with several pages devoted specifically to dawah, such as this one called “How to Convert to Islam and Become a Muslim.”

There’s nothing wrong or illegal about religious groups trying to convert non-believers, but such activities become unethical when the groups try to pass themselves off as something else entirely — for example, when Scientologists set up innocent-looking “personality assessment” and “stress testing” booths in shopping malls, or when CAIR tries to pretend that it is a civil rights organization.

Later in the same day, I took this photo in San Francisco’s Castro District, at the corner of 18th and Castro streets. As everyone knows, the Castro is the epicenter of gay activism in the United States (note the rainbow flag in the bank window). And even in this neighborhood, the ISLAM bus ads appear prominently and frequently.

Now, whenever any Christian group tries to “cure” gays of homosexuality, or (as happened recently) campaigns to ban gay marriage in California, there are invariably eruptions of outrage in the Castro and throughout the San Francisco gay community, often culminating in protest marches, citizen forums, lawsuits, and more. Which is to be expected.

However, I have not heard the slightest peep of protest about these ISLAM ads appearing in gay neighborhoods. But, you may ask, why should anyone protest? Because, as it turns out, ICNA is virulently anti-gay. On ICNA’s own Web site is this passage, calling homosexuality “a pollution of the soul”:

Marriage is the proper form of satisfying the sexual activity. Adultery, fornication or homosexuality and such things are a pollution of the souls and the purity of genealogies.

Elsewhere on ICNA’s “Why Islam?” site, an essay is posted which says,

Islam teaches that homosexual acts are sinful and punishable by God. This teaching comes not from human beings, but from the Creator of all humans. God tells us in His own words how He punished the people of Lot for their homosexual behaviour.

The story of prophet Lot, on whom be peace, finds mention in several Qur’anic passages, especially Chapter 26:160-175 which reads:

[Qur’anic quote describing the destruction of Sodom.]

From these passages we learn that God saved Lot and the righteous ones of his family, and rained on the rest a shower of brimstone, so they were utterly destroyed. This is mentioned in the Qur’an not only for the sake of information, but mainly to serve as a warning to anyone who dares to repeat such acts.

Clear enough for you?

Furthermore, at major Muslim conferences co-sponsored by ICNA, various speakers and presenters said things like,

Dr Hathout told his audience that the materialism that has captured American society and to which Muslims are not exempt, troubles him. Also troubling is the impetus in modern society to accept the homosexuality as just another lifestyle choice. He reminded his audience that Islam does not accept homosexuality, and he reminded them that people have the choice to make and are mandated by Islam to reject homosexuality.

Moreover, clerics associated with ICNA have issued fatwas against homosexuality. Again, even cursory Web searches bring up many links of all sorts suggesting that ICNA — like most fundamentalist Islamic parties — is unapologetically opposed to homosexuality, and advocates strict adherence to Islamic law, under which the penalty for homosexual acts is death.

And yet — there is a resounding silence from San Francisco’s gay community about these ads, which are paid for by a group whose ultimate goal is to outlaw homosexuality in the United States. Imagine, for a moment, if a Christian group with similar goals had paid for and displayed proselytizing ads in the Castro. The outrage would be deafening. And yet when a Muslim group does it — silence. Why? There’s only one possible answer: Fear.

The cowardice and hypocrisy of the gay activist community on this issue is deeply troubling.

Other cities:

When the same ad campaign appeared on the New York subway system, the New York Post exposed the terror connections behind the ICNA-associated imam who was promoting the ads. Even so, as Weasel Zippers pointed out, the media continued to write puff pieces about ICNA.

The “Creeping Sharia” blog had an extensive post about the Ft. Lauderdale bus ads which had some excellent background research on the issue — pointing out, for example, how the ads (and CAIR’s Web site associated with the ads) are insulting and offensive to Christians and Jews. The Creeping Sharia post also has a great deal more evidence conclusively proving that ICNA is an offshoot of Jamaat-e-Islami, the Pakistani religious party seeking to establish an Islamic caliphate.

The controversy over the ads in Ft. Lauderdale led the County Commission to consider banning all religious advertising on local buses.

In addition to San Francisco and Ft. Lauderdale, the same ad campaign has also appeared in Miami and Chicago. This article says the ads have also run in Orlando, Jacksonville (FL), Portland (OR), and San Antonio.

Zomblog readers report seeing ISLAM ads from this campaign on buses, trains and billboards in New York, Baltimore and Seattle. Have you spotted them in your town?

The streets of London: January 10, 2009.

On January 10, the war between Israel and Hamas became a global conflict. No longer confined to the Gaza Strip, the fighting spread to cities around the world: what were billed as “anti-war” demonstrations from Los Angeles to Copenhagen and beyond were in fact overtly pro-Hamas demonstrations, and on Saturday, January 10 there was a unprecedented eruption of violence and extremism in dozens of European and American cities, surpassing anything seen at anti-war rallies in recent years:

¤ In London, protesters physically attacked police officers with unrestrained abandon and no fear of arrest;
¤ In Copenhagen, Hamas supporters screamed in public that they want to kill all Jews;
¤ In Calgary, neo-Nazis marched alongside leftists and Muslim extremists, in a grand coalition of anti-Semites;
¤ In Los Angeles, a car full of Israel-supporters barely escaped serious harm when an enraged mob tried to attack them;
¤ In Duisburg (Germany), police broke into a private home and tore down a flag displaying a Star of David, to appease stone-throwing protesters;
¤ In Belfast, an Israel-owned mall kiosk was surrounded and menacingly harrassed;
…to name just a few, as you will see in the reports listed below.

One wonders: Why January 10? Was the aggression somehow coordinated among the various far-left and Islamic groups which organized the protests in each city — an attempt to “Globalize the Intifada“? Or did the simultaneous outbreak of violence and anger in several places occur naturally? We may never know. But for some reason, this particular moment in the seemingly endless battle between Israel and its neighbors has tipped the scales, and the fighting now happens not just in Gaza, but wherever in the world Hamas supporters come face to face with anyone they deem an opponent (whether those be Israel supporters or police officers). The Hamas supporters will claim that the reason for the fresh anger now is that Israel has gone too far this time, allowing too many civilian casualties and unleashing a disproportionately large response. But what seems disproportionate this time around is not the nature of the fighting in Gaza but the extent to which the media buys into the Hamas narrative, and the unchallenged propaganda coming out of the war zone.

In any case, this post is meant to be a comprehensive roundup of the many anti-Israel protests that happened on January 10, 2009. And what makes these reports especially noteworthy is that they were almost all produced by citizen journalists: In just about every city, the mainstream media failed to cover the incidents thoroughly or honestly: As protesters waved Hamas flags and screamed “Long Live Hitler,” bloggers stepped in to do the job the media wouldn’t do.

Below is a list of the outbreaks of protest violence and extremism in each location: A few videos and photos are posted here, but most of the documentation is to be found in the various links provided.

LONDON

January 10: Masked protesters attack hapless and cringing police officers with complete impunity in scene of chaos on the streets of London. (You may want to lower your volume before playing this video due to its loud soundtrack.)

Gateway Pundit published a good overview of the January 10 violent protests in London.

January 10: Azzam Tamimi of the Muslim Association of Britain (and frequent television pundit) screams “Allahu Ackbar! Today, we are all Hamas!…Hamas is our leader to liberation…. Israel has dug its grave!” to wild cheers at a protest in London against the Gaza War. As Harry’s Place noted, “This was a Hamas Rally.” In London.

Photos of the anti-Israel rally that Tamimi was speaking to can be found at this Kodak Gallery page, taken by “J.” Most of those in the audience, it seems, were middle-class Britons — not wild-eyed extremists.

January 3: “Run, you fucking cowards, run!” protesters yelled at fleeing police in this astonishing video showing anti-Israel rioters running rampant in London at a protest the previous week, hurling projectiles and verbal abuse on a woefully unprepared and apparently incompetent police force.

January 3: Later the same day, protesters beseiged the Israeli embassy in London, in what practically amounted to a pitched battle with the police — who were once again defensive and passive.

After several days of violence and vandalism at various London businesses rumored to be owned by Jews, Harry’s Place began referring to the ongoing outbreak as “Kristallwoche” — a full week of Kristallnachts.

LOS ANGELES

January 10: Ringo’s Pictures has an extensive report about an anti-Israel protest in Los Angeles, which includes this frightening scene of protesters trying to swarm over a car whose passengers were waving an Israeli flag (starting after the first minute of the video); fortunately, security teams were able to hold the crowd back long enough for the car to escape.

This picture by Ringo from the same protest shows a sign declaring “The world must destroy Isreal.”

And this one dredges up the ol’ “Jews killed God” meme with an added twist: Jesus is equated with the Palestinians.

Another video by Ringo from the same protest shows the police surrounded but successfully fending off a hostile crowd. The no-nonsense riot-control tactics of the Los Angeles police are in stark contrast to the ineffectual “law-enforcement” methods seen in London.

January 6: At an earlier protest in front of the Israeli consulate in L.A, protesters yelled “Long Live Hitler” and “Put Jews in ovens,” as captured in this video uploaded by “ezpose” to LiveLeak (starting at the 1 minute 30 second mark), and first noted by Gateway Pundit.

DUISBURG

January 10: The Jewish Odysseus blog has the video and the full story of an incident that was first reported on The Muqata: in a chilling replay of a scene straight out of late-1930s Germany, police in Duisburg broke into a private home and tore down the residents’ Star of David symbol — to appease a braying mob.

Here’s the video, and the original “live-blogging” description of what happened:

Today, 10.000 people demonstrated against Israel here in my hometown Duisburg (Germany) and to express their solidarity with Hamas. So, my girlfriend and me put two Israel flags out of the windows of our flat in the 3rd floor. During the demonstration which went through our street the police broke into our flat and removed the flag of Israel. The statement of the police was to de-escalate the situation, because many youth demonstrators were on the brink of breaking into our apartment house. Before this they threw snowballs, knifes and stones against our windows and the complete building. We both were standing on the other side of the street and were shocked by seeing a police officer standing in our bedroom and opening the window to get the flag. The picture illustrate this situation. The police acquiesced in the demands of the mob.

This German-language TV report briefly shows the same scene of the flag-removal by the police, but from a different angle.

The story was later picked up by The Jerusalem Post.

COPENHAGEN

January 10: Danish blogger Ted Ekeroth posted this video of an anti-Semitic demonstration in Copenhagen’s main square. As also translated at Gateway Pundit, after giving a Nazi salute at 0:41 one of the protesters says in Danish at 1:10, “We want to kill all the Jews, all the Jews should be slain, they have no right to exist!“, among many other offensive statements in Arabic and Danish.

Here’s another video, apparently taken at the same rally by YouTube user “djgreg7” which shows (starting at 0:32) pro-Palestinian protesters screaming “Hitler! Heil Hitler! Hitler! Hitler!” Later in the video, according to some commenters, one of the protesters yells in Danish, “We must just kill all those Jews, man!”

CALGARY

January 10: Members of the white supremacist neo-Nazi group Aryan Guard participate in the January 10 Gaza War “peace” protest in Calgary, as captured by photographer Robert Thivierge. An article about the incident in the Calgary Herald notes that the protest’s organizers claimed to not be particularly happy with the presence of the neo-Nazis, but basically did nothing to stop them from joining the march. National Post columnist Kevin Libin notes the incredible hypocrisy of the march’s organizers, who at a similar rally eight days earlier had assaulted, harrassed and then called the police to arrest a single protester who had the gall to carry an Israeli flag; and yet those same organizers claim they had no right or ability to stop the Aryan Guard from participating in the January 10 protest. It’s more than just hypocrisy: it shows that the other anti-Israel protesters tacitly accepted the neo-Nazis in their midst.

As Robert Thivierge points out in his roll-over pop-up notations for this photo, the “S”s in “Terrorist State” were made to look like the Nazi SS insignia; and that the Aryan Guard member on the right is wearing the same insignia on his collar.

In this final picture from the set, the Aryan Guard members are shown participating in the march, completely unopposed.
Thivierge’s full series of photos from the protest shows the rest of the protesters who happily marched with neo-Nazis. Also note that the message displayed by the Aryan Guard (calling Israel a “terrorist state”) was identical to the messages displayed at nearly every similar rally.

Ezra Levant has another picture of them later in the rally — giving a Nazi salute.

BERLIN

January 10: This six-minute video shows a compilation of scenes from an anti-Semitic rally in Berlin that is all the more shocking considering where it took place. Could anyone have ever imagined such things would be on the agenda again in Berlin, so soon after WWII? The protesters are speaking German, but certain passages clearly stand out: At 1:33, they chant “Death to Israel”; at 2:51, a Muslim protester yells “Juden raus!” (Jews out) — which is of one the exact phrases that the Nazi mobs yelled in the 1930s; at 2:57, the same protester yells “Death to the Jews”; and from 3:38 to 5:00, the Muslims protesters en masse call for the establishment of a global Islamic caliphate — while feckless Germans blithely show their solidarity.

At 3:18 in the video above, a sign goes by in the Berlin crowd which says “Deutschland erwache” (“Germany awake”) above a monetary symbol pointing to a Star of David. A clear photo of the sign can be seen here. “Deutschland erwache,” however, is not just another random phrase — it was a populist slogan frequently used by the Nazi Party in the 1930s and ’40s.

BELFAST

January 10: The Slugger O’Toole blog captured the moment when anti-Israel protesters surrounded an Israeli-owned kiosk (which sells spa products from the Dead Sea) and screamed “Boycott Israeli goods!” while showering the kiosk with hundreds of leaflets. According to the on-site witness, “The staff of the targeted stall were visibly shaken, one woman and one man reduced to tears.” As well they should be. Because as Harry’s Place notes, one of these same Israeli kiosks in Denmark had been violently attacked eight days earlier by a Palestinian who shot both the employees; the Belfast kiosk employees must have been fearing for their lives.

SAN FRANCISCO

January 10: As already extensively covered here at zombietime, blatant anti-Semitism was on display at San Francisco’s January 10 “anti-war” rally. This new photo (by a photographer who wishes to remain anonymous) showing the same sign we featured earlier also reveals the little girl carrying a miniature version of her mother’s sign as well.

Another photo from the zombietime report shows a protester calling for all “Zionazis” (code for “Jews who support Israel”) to be violently attacked.

And this video by “juklux” shows San Francisco protesters burning and stomping on Israeli flags.

WASHINGTON D.C.

January 10: Marooned in Marin posted this photo from their report about the Washington D.C. protest which shows a kaffiyeh-wearing woman holding a sign with an approving citation of a conspiracy theory by KKK Grand Wizard and white nationalist anti-Semite David Duke.

These two additional photos from Marooned in Marin show a woman assaulting the photographer with her sign and another guy “flipping off” the camera and yelling “Fuck you!”

This Ain’t Hell also attended the January 10 D.C. protest and took this photo of the protesters praying toward Mecca.

NEW YORK

The protests have continued after January 10, as the war between Israel and Hamas escalates.

January 11: For example, Berman Post attended an anti-Israel rally in New York on January 11 and also took a photo of protesters performing an Islamic prayer during the rally.

TigerHawk filed photos from the same event as well, one of many that have taken place in New York over the last two weeks.

DORTMUND

January 10: This Turkish-language sign (submitted by reader “Flippowitsch”) appeared at a protest in Dortmund, Germany on January 10, and compared Israel and Zionists to the Devil.

OSLO, Jan. 8: The Norwegian capital erupted into riots on January 8 during an anti-Israel demonstration. Videos of the rioting can be seen here and here.

TORONTO, Jan. 2: Near the end of this video recorded on January 2 at a virulent anti-Israel rally in Toronto, a citizen journalist asks a protester why he had said “Hitler didn’t do a good job,” and the protester responds by smashing the photographer in the face. Earlier in the video, starting at 1:14, one of the Palestinians shouts at the Israel supporters, “You are the brothers of pigs! You are the brothers of monkeys!” and so on.

CHICAGO, Jan. 9: Freedom Folks has a report from Chicago about another ANSWER-sponsored rally which featured this sign calling Jews terrorists — just like the similar sign in San Francisco. Also note that “Mossad did 9-11” and “Yes We Can Free Palestine.”

MONTREAL, Jan. 10: In this video (uploaded by “Technion932”) of a rally in Montreal attended by leading Quebec politicians, protesters burn Israeli flags, chant support for Hezbollah, and (starting at 4:05) chant in Arabic, “Palestine is ours; the Jews are our dogs.”

AMSTERDAM, Jan. 3: In this video, a socialist member of the Dutch Parliament calls for intifada while (starting at 1:05) his fellow protesters chant in Dutch, “Hamas, Hamas, Jews to the gas” in the background.

COLUMBUS, Jan. 5: Hourglass1941 has videos from a small protest in Columbus, Ohio in which a professor at Ohio State University defends Hamas and a local anti-Israel activist goes on a bizarre and disturbing rant.

SASKATOON, Jan. 10: Because No One Asked reports on a small protest in snowbound Saskatoon, Canada in which someone carried a sign saying “Israel kills to satisfy YHWH blood lust.”

TEHRAN, Jan. 13: At a government-sponsored anti-Israel rally in Tehran, protesters burned Israeli and US flags — and burned posters of Obama as well. He hasn’t even taken office yet, and Obama is already the new Bush.

CARACAS, Jan. 8: This picture was taken at an anti-Israel rally in Caracas, Venezuela in front of the Israeli consulate on January 8. Notice the Nazi salute given by the protester on the left.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Jan. 13: In this video taken at an anti-Semitic rally in Ft. Lauderdale on January 13, protesters (at around the 2:25 mark) begin chanting offensive Arabic slogans about Jews, and at 3:05 begin giving the Nazi salute. Then at 3:10 they start to yell, “Go, go Hitler! He should have finished you off! He should have finished you off!” Similar antics continue for the full ten-minute video. This film proves that the notorious Ft. Lauderdale rally on December 30 in which a protester shouted “Go back to the oven” and “You need a big oven, that’s what you need,” while other protesters called for Israel to be nuked and exterminated, was no fluke.

MELBOURNE, Jan. 18: As noted by Tim Blair, a protest in Melbourne, Australia featured a young Muslim girl holding up this sign.

For nearly every day of the last week, San Francisco has seen street protests about the fighting in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. Hundreds of Palestinians, as well as left-wing activists organized by ANSWER, have marched and chanted in and around downtown San Francisco starting on December 30, and continuing (with a break on New Year’s Day) every day since, with no end in sight.

I have been unable to attend and document these protests in person, but KTVU Channel 2 filmed the protest on January 2, 2009 and made some of the raw video available on its site. Because the KTVU video page does not display or load properly on many computers, I have downloaded the raw video and, after editing out a section at the beginning where not much happens, uploaded it to YouTube so more people can get a flavor of what these protests are like.

Note in particular the moment at the 0.22 mark in the video when the Palestinian protesters reach across the barricades to attack the five pro-Israel protesters, and have to be restrained by police. At the end, one of the pro-Israel protesters, who were vastly outnumbered, declined to be interviewed by the cameraman, saying, “I’m a little spooked.” After watching this video, I think we’re all a little spooked! It’s as if the battle in Gaza has come to San Francisco.

This full KTVU video shows how, after this incident, the police were forced to escort the pro-Israel protesters inside a building — to keep them safe from the Palestinian protesters, who could not be controlled.

Meanwhile, at an earlier San Francisco Gaza protest on December 30, the Palestinian protesters (according to this post at the “At the Back of the Hill” blog) chanted the following slogans in Arabic:

“Itbach al Yahud” (slaughter the Jews)
“Falastin balad’na w’al Yahud qalab’na” (Palestine is our land and the Jews are our dogs)
“ba ruh, ba dam, nafdeek ya Falastin” (with our soul, with our blood, we will cleanse you oh Palestine),
“al mawt al Yahud” (death to the Jews),
“Khaybar Khaybar ya Yahud, jaish-Muhammad saya’ud” (Khaybar Khaybar oh Jews, the army of Muhammad will return).

At the Back of the Hill noted,

While the Arabs screamed their desire to exterminate Jews, the English-monolingualists simply stood there happily smiling their approbation.

Here’s a sample picture to whet your appetite:

Code Pink has been protesting in front of the Marine Corps Officer Recruitment Office in Berkeley for a solid year now. On rare occasion other groups will join them and they’ll combine to make a somewhat larger protest that will make the evening news — but in actuality Code Pink has tried to maintain a presence in front of the office every single day. Most of these day-by-day micro-protests go completely unnoticed by the media (and the public), but Code Pink is doing their best to keep the pressure on continuously (though on some days they can’t seem to muster even one protester).

Anyway, over the past year, I’ve had occasion to pass through downtown Berkeley quite a number of times, and whenever I did, I tried to snap a picture or two of whatever’s happening in front of the recruiting office. Most of the time these daily protests fell far beneath the threshold of something that would merit a full zombietime report. And so the pictures were filed away and forgotten.

Until now.

This posting will be nothing more than a melange of random snapshots of the ongoing Code Pink protests over the last several months, in no particular order, and with no particular narrative. Just a “photo dump,” as the expression goes. If you have a need for an as-yet unseen photo in your coverage of Code Pink or Berkeley or whatever, feel free to use any of these.

The message on the back of the Code Pink truck slowly evolves over time in a way that is only noticeable if you have a series of pictures extending across several months. This is what it said early in 2008…

…and this is what it said months later. Or is is the other way around?

I just can’t get enough of these hilarious Code Pink Mercedes Benz logos. To this day I can’t understand how a “peace group” can have trouble making a peace sign. Even more mystifiying: Most of the women in Code Pink have been “peace” protesters for their entire adult lives (even long before they joined Code Pink), and yet after all that time they still can’t consistently get it right.

Oh, that’s rich! How clever!

To celebrate Mother’s Day (or something along those lines), Code Pink baked a bunch of pink man-shaped sugar cookies and displayed them on a pink camouflage tarp in front of the office. The broken cookies, according to Zanne Joi, represented dead and injured soldiers.

Whenever a video camera hove into view, someone would inevitably march back and back wearing an “Impeach” sign.

Sometime in 2008 Code Pink decided to jump on the Global Warming bandwagon by declaring that “War Is Not Green!”

They used their oh-so-“green” gas-guzzling flatbed truck to stage a week-long campover directly in front of the office. Needless to say, the police were none too pleased.

At one point Code Pink had exhibited a long piece of butcher paper on which someone(s) had written an interminable rant. This is just a small section of it.

Back in March, I posted a short report about a protest against Chinese oppression in Tibet, put on by the large Tibetan community of Berkeley. Well, that ongoing protest is still happening four months later; every week, and sometimes more than once a week, a substantial contingent of Tibetans parade through downtown Berkeley around rush hour, decrying China’s occupation of Tibet.

Code Pink’s ongoing protest in front of Berkeley’s Marine Corps Recruiting Office (actually just one block away from where this picture was taken) gets tons of media attention — as do the tree-sitters trying to save the oak grove above the U.C. Berkeley campus; but this Tibetan protest is actually much larger, much better organized, and is (in my opinion) on a much more important topic than either of those other “standing protests.” And yet, aside from the few mentions on this site, I’ve seen nothing at all about the Berkeley Tibetans in the press.
